Welcome to the Sumba Foundation Australia The island of Sumba is exceptionally beautiful, but also one of the poorest in the Indonesian Archipelago. Malnutrition, malaria and tuberculosis are widespread and the infant mortality rate is among the highest in the world.
Sumba is one of the closest islands to Australia but many Sumbanese live in abject poverty and do not have the ability to provide for even the most basic of needs that we in Australia take for granted. The Sumba Foundation Australia is a non-profit organisation that has been set up by a group of committed Australians to assist our Sumbanese neighbours in finding ways to improve the quality of their lives. We are working closely with The Sumba Foundation in Indonesia and are currently in the processing of applying for AUSAID accreditation and DGR (Deductible Gift Recipient) status with the Australian tax office. Our aim is to provide humanitarian aid by fostering village-based projects that impact health (including services and malaria control), education, water and income-generation, while preserving and respecting the fragile culture and traditions of the Sumbanese people. If you are interested in helping or would like more information please do not hesitate to CONTACT US. Some of our 2010 projects are detailed below. Malnutrition ProgramThe Malnutrition Program has recieved a huge boost thanks to Ozforex, one of Sumba Foundation Australia's major sponsors. Oxforex donated the funds to purchase a new 4WD drive vehicle to enhance our malnutrition program. We now hope to be able to provide lifesaving nutrition to severely malnourished children in the Kodi area.
More Project Updates in our September Newsletter. Malaria Microscopy Training CentreOne of the Sumba Foundation's major initiatives in the fight against malaria has been the establishment of a Malaria Microscopy Training Centre in the town of Waikabubak. Thanks to a generous donation from Melbourne firm McMasters Accountants, Solicitors, Financial Planners, the viability of this facility is assured. Recently, 16 Government microscopists from East Sumba completed the 5 week course. They are pictured below with Training Centre Director Dr Claus Bogh.
